North Korea-China Border Almost Deserted

Trade with North Korea has been suspended due to confusion over its currency reform. The communist state has forbidden foreign tourists from entering the country. As a result, the North Korea-China border is inactively still.

Travel agencies in Dandong, China said North Korea had suspended foreigners from entering the nation, including the Chinese, from December 10.

In addition, they said that the lack of a foreign exchange rate adjustment after the redenomination had halved Dandong’s trade with North Korea.

A North Korea expert commented that suspending tourism in the winter is a regular practice and unrelated to currency reform. He added that foreign tourism will probably resume after February 16, North Korean leader Kim Jong Il’s birthday.
