'Korea Exports its Alphabet'

The mayor of the Indonesian city of Bau Bau says the Korean “hangeul” alphabet is better suited to the nuances of the local Cia-Cia tribe than the Roman characters Indonesia uses in its written language.

The Cia-Cia recently designated hangeul as the official alphabet for its spoken-only language.

The Toronto Star carried a Monday report titled "Korea's latest export: Its alphabet."

The report detailed the Cia-Cia’s adoption of hangeul, citing a Cia-Cia elementary school principal as saying that 75 percent of the students at his school use hangeul fluently after four months.
