Gov't to Actively Seek Grand Bargain in 2010

The government plans to actively implement next year President Lee Myung-bak's "grand bargain" to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.

The Unification Ministry will also devise detailed action plans for its new peace mechanism for the Korean Peninsula, which will include the establishment of high-level talks to realize an inter-Korean economic community and development projects for North Korea in the fields of economy, education, finance and infrastructure.

The ministry reported Thursday its security and diplomacy goals for next year at the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses in Seoul, with the president attending.

The ministry presented three goals to realize a new inter-Korean paradigm for peace on the peninsula and inter-Korean relations, which include improving inter-Korean ties based on principles, realizing productive humanitarianism, and enhancing reunification capabilities.
