With just a week to go before the World Cup ... authorities believe that foot-and-mouth disease is under control. The Agriculture Ministry told the press that authorities have now culled more than 110-thousand animals to try to contain the disease. A ministry official stated that it has received no fresh reports of suspected foot-and-mouth disease. Foot-and-mouth disease is contagious and can be fatal to animals with cloven hooves. It is harmless to humans, but countries fear their soccer fans could inadvertently bring the disease home. On Wednesday, police arrested a farmer for allegedly burying hundreds of pigs to cover up the outbreak. The farmer is suspected of burying more than two hundred dead pigs near his farm in central Kyonggi Province late last month and early this month, without alerting authorities. South Korea confirmed four new cases of the disease in pigs between Sunday and Monday, bringing to 12 the total since the outbreak started on May 4th. European governments have warned soccer fans traveling to South Korea to leave all food behind when they return home to prevent bringing the disease back.
