KBS, MBC File Complaint Over Olympic Airing Rights

Written: 2010-01-26 14:34:18Updated: 0000-00-00 00:00:00

Local broadcasters KBS and MBC have filed a complaint with the Korea Communications Commission, seeking arbitration in their dispute with SBS over exclusive airing rights for the Olympics and the World Cup.

SBS recently won the exclusive rights to air domestically all Olympic and World Cup games here until 2016 by outbidding its rivals at KBS and MBC by some 34-point-five million U.S. dollars.

KBS and MBC claim the exclusive rights are in violation of a 2006 three-way agreement on the relaying of international sporting events.

According to KBS and MBC, SBS has been rejecting their demand that the relaying rights be shared in return for compensation.

The communications commission will hold arbitration after deciding on the legality of SBS’s exclusive rights.
