S.Korea to Deploy Artillery Radar Near Sea Border

The Defense Ministry is mulling the deployment of artillery-tracking radar on the Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong islands in the Yellow Sea.

In a meeting with lawmakers of the National Assembly defense committee, Defense Minister Kim Tae-young said the military will push to deploy artillery-tracking radar, called TPQ, on the islands just south of the western sea border.

The radar will allow the South Korean military to detect hostile artillery by tracking projectiles in flight and locating launching and landing points.

In addition, the ministry is reviewing the deployment of additional K-9 self-propelled howitzers to islands near the Northern Limit Line including Baengnyeong and Yeonpyeong.

According to the ministry, North Korea fired about 300 shells on Wednesday and 50 more over the following two days.
