Gov’t to Open More Welfare Centers for NK Defectors

The Unification Ministry says it will operate 16 more welfare centers for North Korean defectors in mid-February.

The welfare facilities, dubbed Hana Centers, assist North Korean defectors as they adjust to their new lives in South Korea.

There are currently a total of 22 Hana Centers in operation. Six are in trial operation and the rest are run by eleven local governments nationwide.

A Unification Ministry spokesman said Wednesday that the ministry will step up support services for North Korean defectors through the use of professional counselors and by increasing the number of Hana Centers to 38.
