Seoul Opens Exhibition Hall on Cia-Cia Tribe

The Seoul Metropolitan Government has opened an exhibition hall introducing the Cia-Cia, a tribe in Indonesia that has adopted the Korean “hangeul” alphabet to preserve their oral-only language.

The hall has put on display photos and materials describing how the Cia-Cia came to adopt hangeul and how they are learning the Korean alphabet.

A group of the tribe visited South Korea for six days last December, toured around Gwanghwamun Plaza and signed an accord on the promotion of cultural and arts exchanges with Seoul.

An official at the city government office said Seoul will help the Cia-Cia with their efforts to adopt hangeul through various exchange programs.
