Civic Group Expresses Concern Over Monopoly

The civic group Cultural Action is expressing concern over SBS’ monopoly of Korean broadcasting rights to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.

In the statement on Friday, Cultural Action said it was concerned about SBS, a terrestrial broadcasting station, monopolizing all Winter Olympics content in violation of the Korea Pool (KP). Under the KP arrangement, the three Korean terrestrial broadcasters, KBS, MBC and SBS, share broadcasting rights.

Cultural Action says with this monopoly, SBS is encroaching on viewers’ rights to universal access. The civic group added that SBS is forgoing its social responsibilities and using viewers as pawns for its monetary gain.

The statement urged the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Communications Commission to hold an equitable and proactive mediation in order to resolve this situation.
