NK Again Designates Naval Firing Zones

North Korea has again designated temporary naval firing zones near the disputed inter-Korean maritime border.

Jang Kwang-il, the head of the South Korean Defense Ministry's policy bureau, told a parliamentary defense committee Friday that the North named eight areas in its territorial waters north of the Northern Limit Line (NLL) in the East Sea and Yellow Sea as firing zones.

According to the Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Administration in South Korea, the North’s designations will be in effect from Saturday to Monday.

The designated firing zones include North Korean territorial waters near Baengnyeong Island and east of Daecheong Island in the Yellow Sea as well as two areas in the East Sea.

Late last month, the North designated areas near the NLL in the Yellow Sea as firing zones and shot hundreds of artillery shells into the areas.
