Gov't Skeptical About Reported Rajin Port Deals

A South Korean government official says there is a need to wait and see whether China and Russia will follow through on their reported investment in and development of North Korea’s Rajin port.

On reports of the port's development, the official cited previous talks of China investing in North Korean mines, which fell through before signing a memorandum of understanding.

On the comment by a Chinese government official that North Korea gave China and Russian rights to use its Rajin port, the South Korean official said Seoul is not aware of any construction work there this year.

As for the rumor about North Korea clinching ten-billion dollars in foreign investment, the official emphasized that it remains to be seen whether Chinese investment in North Korea will really take place over the short term.
