Buddhist Rite Held to Mark Inclusion on UNESCO List

A Korean Buddhist ritual listed on a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list was held in Seoul on Thursday.

The ritual was held to commemorate the ritual’s inclusion on the UNESCO list and to pray for Korea’s successful hosting of the November G20 summit.

The ritual, called Youngsanjae, is a reenactment of Buddha preaching to people in India some 26-hundred years ago. It was included on a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list in September 2009.

At the ceremony on Thursday, some ten-thousand people --- including famous figures from political, financial and religious circles --- attended to pray for Korean prosperity.
