S.Korean Civic Group Urges France to Return Ancient Texts

A South Korean civic group is demanding that additional ancient texts that were found to have been stolen from Korea by France in the 19th century be returned.

Cultural Action said Friday that the additional texts are part of a list that was drawn up by Korea in 2006 of “Oegyujanggak” items it hopes to have returned from France. The list includes three large books, nine small books, one celestial map, seven scrolls and three suits of armor with helmets.

Earlier on Thursday, Yonhap News quoted Professor Lee Jin-myeong at Jean Moulin University Lyon 3 as saying that more ancient texts stolen by France during its 1866 invasion of Korea have been discovered at the National Library of France.

The professor said that a list at the library shows an additional three marble plates and a book made of jade were also stolen in 1866 apart from the 297 Joseon Dynasty royal books and royal genealogical tables.
