'NK Diplomat Hints at Resumption of 6-Party Talks'

The Voice of America (VOA) quoted a high-ranking European Union (EU) official as saying Friday that the North Korean ambassador to the U.K. believes that the six-party denuclearization talks could resume before the middle of June.

Chair of the Delegation for Relations with the Korean Peninsula, Christian Ehler, told the broadcaster in a telephone interview that Ambassador Ja Song-nam believes the multilateral talks will likely resume before an EU delegation’s visit to Pyongyang in June. Ja also reportedly said that the North does not have any preconditions for returning to the negotiating table.

Ehler added that Ja sought EU investment in North Korea. Ja reportedly backed up his request by saying that North Korea’s budget focus has shifted from defense to the economy, including the building of infrastructure.

VOA said Ja visited Brussels on Thursday local time for a two-hour meeting with the delegation.

The Delegation for Relations with the Korean Peninsula pays annual visits to the two Koreas. This year, the delegation plans to visit in June Beijing, Pyongyang and Seoul.
