Red Devils vow to shout no anti-U.S. slogans in Korea-U.S. match

The "Red Devils" supporters group of South Korean national football team pledged Sunday to shout no anti-American slogans in their team's Group D match against the United States.

The group made the pledge in the pop-up banner of its Web site (www.reddevil.or.kr), which said it intends to "encourage the Korean players, as the 12th man" and engage in no attempts to use soccer fever for political ends.

"NO to anti-American slogans, YES to patriotic slogans," said the banner. "It is a game we cannot afford to lose. However, we will never use anti-American slogans during the match," the group said.

"If you are planning to do anything that could seriously displease the organizers or the opposing team, then please move outside the Sector N, where we the Red Devils will be seated," the notice said. "In such cases, we expect you to be responsible for your
actions," the notice said.

Kang Jun-soo, a Red Devils member, wrote in the fan club's electronic bulletin board that Koreans should follow in the footsteps of their ancestors in the early 20th century who led massive yet peaceful protests against Japanese imperialists. "If we were to act impulsively and do wrong things, we would tarnish our national image," said Kang.

"We should cheer our team in such a manner that the players will be able to enjoy the game," wrote Choi Jung-yun, another fan club member.
