A deafening sea of red greeted the United States squad in their World Cup Group D clash with co-hosts South Korea at Daegu World Cup Stadium on Monday. Exactly as in last week's Poland clash which Korea won 2-0, thousands of the "Red Devils" cheering squad waved their national flags and shouted the "O Pilseung (Must Win) Korea" roar whir which has become their trademark since their formation in 1995. The match was preceded by a massive display of red and white placards reading "GO KR 16!," expressing the fans hopes of seeing their home team qualify for the second round of the world's greatest sporting event. The 61,000-strong crowd was dominated by Korean fans wearing the traditional red shirts of their national squad, but there was a small yet noticeable group of American soccer fans scattered in the stands. Although more than 10,000 policemen were on guard around the stadium and other key locations against possible trouble, the atmosphere in the stadium was never confrontational, even as striker Hwang Sun-hong bled profusely after suffering a head injury early in the first half. Rather, the atmosphere was one of excitement and pride for everyone, without any consciousness of the excessive rivalry many people were worried about.
