NK Completes Probe on S.Korean Holdings at Geumgang

North Korea wrapped up Wednesday its weeklong investigation into South Korean real estate holdings at Mount Geumgang.

Focus is now on whether the North will follow through with its threat to confiscate South Korean-held property if tourism to Mount Geumgang is not resumed.

A Hyundai Asan official said that some ten South Korean officials whose investigations were completed returned home via an overland route on Wednesday afternoon.

Some 60 employees and 37 South Korean companies were subject to the investigations, which began last Thursday with a probe on a family reunion center owned by the South Korean government.

North Korea stated that the probe is part of “special measures,” including a termination of relevant contracts and a confiscation of real estate held by South Korea, it will continue to pursue if the suspension on Mount Geumgang tours persists.

The North's unilateral probe is considered to be an attempt to force South Korea to lift its ban on the tours Seoul imposed following the death of a South Korean tourist who was shot and killed by a North Korean soldier at the resort in the summer of 2008.
