France eliminated from World Cup

And now the World Cup round-up...
Defending champions France were drummed out of the World Cup in the first round Tuesday in Incheon, Korea. They lost two-to-zero to Denmark, becoming the first champion eliminated in the opening round since Brazil in 19-66.

Dennis Rommedahl scored in the 22nd minute and Jon Dahl Tomasson got his fourth goal in three games to ensure that Denmark would top Group A. The Danes reached the second round for the second consecutive World Cup and will play either England, Sweden or Argentina in the next round.

France, needing to win by a two-goal margin to advance, couldn't manage even its first goal of the tournament, despite the return of star midfielder Zinedine Zidane.

Wails of disappointment echoed through France after its beloved "Les Bleus" were knocked out of the World Cup and dethroned as world champions. In front of Paris City Hall, where a giant television screen was set up, tears ran down some fans' faces painted in red, white and blue ... the colors of the French flag.

Compounding the disgrace was the fact that the team did not score a single goal in its three Group A matches. It lost one to zero to Senegal and drew zero to zero against Uruguay in its previous contests.

Senegal is going to the second round of its first World Cup after it held on for a three to three tie against Uruguay to finish second to Denmark in Group A. The Africans blew a three to zero lead, but escaped with a draw and will play either Sweden, England or Argentina in the next round.

Germany edged out Cameroon two to zero in a group E final match held in Shizuoka, Japan. Germany sits atop the group E and Ireland, which beat Saudi Arabia three to zero in Yokohama, will join the Germans in round two.
