Germany, England move to quarter-finals

Three times champions Germany has beaten Paraguay one to zero to become the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals. Striker Oliver Neuville struck the only goal of a second round match two minutes into the game following a cross by Bernd Schneider. Germany won the World Cup in 19-54, 19-74 and 19-90. They have also finished runners-up three times and have been in the last eight record 14 times. The Germans now meet either Mexico or the United States for a place in the semi-finals. In Berlin, fans greeted their national team's victory over Paraguay with chants of "Final! Final!" ... confident that the German team can sweep aside the remaining obstacles. Hundreds of fans gathered in and around the Potsdamer Platz in downtown Berlin, waving flags, setting off firecrackers and shouting "Germany!." In Niigata, Japan, Rio Ferdinand scored his first goal for England and Michael Owen and Emile Heskey bagged their first of the World Cup to give their team a three to zero lead over Denmark. An absolute howler by Denmark goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen saw him bundle Ferdinand's sideways header over the line from a David Beckham corner in the fifth minute. Sorensen later made up for his blunder by denying Heskey, but was helpless in the 22nd minute when Owen spun round to finish off a neat three-man move in the area from five meters. Heskey made it three in the 44th minute crashing the ball in from the edge of the area.
