Millions of soccer fans fill streets of victorious S. Korea

Millions of red-clad soccer fans filled the streets of South Korea late Friday to celebrate South Korea's historic advance to the second round of the World Cup finals. Thundering shouts from delirious crowds rocked the entire nation as Park Ji-sung's left-foot shot flew into the net in the 70th minute of the the make-or-break match. Some 500,000 people turned up at two squares near Gwanghwamun street and the City Hall in central Seoul to watch the match on giant TV screens and keep chanting "Oh, Pilsung Korea! (Korea's sure to win!)", "Dae-Han-Min-Guk! (Republic of Korea)!" The main square in front of the Busan Station was filled with a 160,000-strong crowd, and two plazas near Incheon Munhak Football Stadium and the city hall saw some 150,000 Incheon citizens. Municipal memorial parks in Daegu and Gwangju will be filled with some 130,000 and 70,000 people, respectively. According to estimates by the National Police Agency (NPA), Some 1.6 million people gathered at 226 public places nationwide Friday evening to watch the fateful match. These fans, most of them wearing T-shirts with the now-familiar slogan "Be the Reds!", sent the entire nation into noisy frenzy on the sleepless night of celebration.
