Sources from Chong Wa Dae and defense ministry said Saturday the Defense Ministry is considering giving "benefit" to some of the nation's World Cup soccer players in their compulsory military service by revising a relevant law. The nation's 2002 World Cup national team has exceeded expectations, not only winning Korea's first World Cup match but beating Portugal in a 1-0 upset Friday night that lifted co-host Korea to the second round. Currently, athletes who win any Olympic medals or gold medals in the Asian Games are eligible for benefiting from active military service. In that case, they are instead required to serve in public sectors for a certain period. The enforcement decree of the military service exemption law could be expanded to include soccer players who help the nation advance to the top 16 in the World Cup finals and other athletes who help heighten the honor of the nation, the sources said.
