The United States has beaten Mexico two to zero on goals by Brian McBride
and Landon Donovan to advance to the quarterfinals.
McBride connected from 12 yards out in the eighth minute off a pass from Josh
Wolff after a fine run upfield by U.S. captain Claudio Reyna. With the Mexicans
maintaining the ball nearly 70 percent of the time and pressing for the tying
goal, Donovan scored in the 65th minute on a header from just inside the 6-yard
box off a cross from Eddie Lewis, who had sped upfield.
It is the best showing for the U.S. team since the first World Cup in 19-30,
when it beat Belgium and Paraguay in the first round, then lost to Argentina six
to one in the semifinals. The United States next plays on Friday against
Germany, which easily pushed around the Americans during a two to zero
victory at the 19-98 World Cup.
The Americans advanced to the second round only because South Korea upset
Portugal one to zero, allowing the United States to finish second in its group.
President George W. Bush telephoned U.S. coach Bruce Arena about four hours
before kickoff for a pregame pep talk, and the players listened on a speaker
phone.
Four-time champion Brazil defeated Belgium two to zero to secure a place in the
quarterfinals. Rivaldo gave Brazil a one to zero lead in the 67th minute in a
match held in Kobe, Japan Monday night. The Brazilians sealed a victory on a
goal by Ronaldo in the 87th minute.
Brazil ... the only country to play in every World Cup ... had the better chances
but managed only a scoreless draw at halftime.
Brazil faces England on Friday in Shizuoka, Japan. Spain, England, Senegal,
Germany and the United States have already reached the quarterfinals.
Belgium seemed to have gone ahead in the 36th minute when Marc Wilmots
headed a cross from eight meters behind 'keeper Marcos. But Jamaican referee
Peter Prendergast disallowed the goal, ruling the Belgian had impeded a Brazilian
defender.
