A summit of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) closed Friday in Seoul after adopting a statement which urges expanded exchanges among news agencies.

Some 90 CEOs and representatives of 44 newswire companies from 35 countries attended the two-day event. The summit was cohosted by Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency and OANA to commemorate the agency’s 30-year anniversary.

During the event, the delegates discussed strategies for news agencies in the age of new media under the theme of "challenges and opportunities for news agencies."

In addition, the delegates toured Korean mobile telecommunication infrastructure providers and experienced WiBro, a wireless broadband Internet technology developed by the South Korean telecom industry.

Yonhap News said it signed memorandums of understanding with seven news agencies from six countries, including the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Pakistan, to expand bilateral exchanges and cooperation in broadcasting and multimedia.
