S.Korea Condemns NK’s Seizure of Geumgang Properties

South Korea has condemned North Korea’s seizing of South Korean assets at the North’s Mount Geumgang resort.

A South Korean government official said Saturday that Pyongyang’s move is illegal and undermines the fundamentals of inter-Korean relations and that Seoul plans to respond strongly.

Specific response measures are in the process of being reviewed, hinting that Seoul may be reviewing sanctions on the North.

The spokesman for the North Korean Guidance Bureau for Comprehensive Development of Scenic Spots announced on Friday that it will seize the five South Korean assets in the Mount Geumgang resort that it froze on April 13th. The South Korean government owns a reunion center and Seoul’s Korea Tourism Organization owns a cultural center in the resort.

The North added that it would freeze all other assets owned by South Korea's private companies at the resort, including those held by Hyundai Asan. South Korean employees will also be deported.

The North also called upon all private holders of property in North Korea to attend a meeting on Tuesday, when it said it would freeze their assets.
