Major foreign news media carried wide coverage of Korean national football squad's 2 to 1 victory over Italy Tuesday night. German weekly magazine Der Spiegel on-line reported that for the first time in World Cup history there were quarter-finalists from five continents, with the advance of South Korea. The German daily on-line said with the successive drop of major soccer powerhouses, the 8 tickets which had usually been taken by countries in Europe and Latin America were now rather evenly secured by countries in each continent including South Korea, Senegal and the United States. The French news media also gave praises to the Korean team's performances which they described as having unfolded moving dramas with stunning victories. After watching the game between Korea and Italy, French TF1 station, who owns the World Cup relaying rights in France, commented that there is no reason for South Korea not to advance to the final round. Major US newspapers and broadcasting stations employed the best epithets to describe the Korean team's advance to the 8 finals. The USA Today said South Korea has shown superb power and skill and submerged major European soccer powers in a row including the invincible Azzuri corps of Italy. The New York Times and the Washington Post also reported that Korea made a stunning upset by defeating Italy, contrary to everyone's expectation.
