The number of subscriptions to real-time Internet protocol television (IPTV) services has topped two million some 16 months after the services were launched.

The Korea Digital Media Industry Association on Wednesday said that the combined number of subscribers to Korea Telecom (KT), SK Broadband and LG Telecom topped two million on Saturday.

The association said the fast increase in subscribers shows that IPTV is rapidly being recognized as a new media platform. It also said that the government's efforts for the convergence of media and mobile communications is bearing fruit.

The academic world views that developing the IPTV industry as the nation's future engine growth requires continued deregulation and an improved system for the production and supply of open content.
