Dam Near Inter-Korean Border Nearly Finished

A flood control dam near the inter-Korean border at the Imjin River will be completed and begin operation late next month.

The Gunnam Dam is expected to greatly help prevent damage caused by North Korea opening its floodgates to release water into South Korea and on the river's downstream areas. The river flows from North to South Korea.

Construction sources said Sunday that 90 percent of construction is complete 18 months ahead of schedule.

The construction team for the dam say they will complete building facilities to control 13 floodgates before next month and perform test operations for a month to complete construction work.

The cocrete gravity dam will be 26 meters high and 658 meters long, with a reservoir capacity of 71 million tons.
