North Korea has claimed it has succeeded in developing its own nuclear fusion technology.

The North’s official Korea Central News Agency said that North Korean scientists have succeeded in creating a nuclear fusion reaction.

The Rodong Sinmun, the paper of the North’s Workers' Party of Korea, said the achievement was a remarkable event that testifies to the rapid development of technology and science in the communist country.

Nuclear fusion technology is used to generate energy and make weapons whose power significantly exceeds that of a fission bomb.

If the North really has succeeded in developing nuclear fusion technology as it claims, there is speculation that it could be related to North Korea’s ambition to develop weapons, such as thermonuclear bombs.
