A senior South Korean government official says North Korea’s claim of having developed its own nuclear fusion technology is highly suspect.

The official told reporters Wednesday that nuclear fusion technology on the level that the North claims it has developed requires costly facilities and extremely sophisticated research. He says there is no evidence to suggest that the poverty-stricken North Korea has either.

The official added that there is almost no possibility that North Korea has produced hydrogen bombs using nuclear fusion technology.

According to the official, the North’s claims are so preposterous that Seoul is not even reviewing whether it should subject North Korea to sanctions by the United Nations Security Council.
