RFA: NK to Suffer Severe Food Shortage This Year

North Korea is reportedly expected to be short one-point-one million tons of food this year.

Radio Free Asia made the prediction Tuesday, saying that over the past six months, food aid from overseas has covered only 16 percent of the beleaguered nation’s food deficit.

Citing a recent report by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the broadcaster said that North Korea has received 177-thousand tons of food aid from foreign countries over the past six months.

It predicts that if the situation goes unchecked, only 350-thousand tons of the North’s food shortage will be shored up through international assistance.

The FAO said in the report that to alleviate its food shortage, North Korea should look to foreign countries.
