Hakan Sukur scored the fastest opening goal in World Cup history
in just eleven seconds and combined with Ilhan Mansiz on two
others Saturday as Turkey beat co-host South Korea three to two
to clinch third place. Sukur slotted a right-foot shot wide of
Korean goalie Lee Un-jae to beat the previous record of 15 seconds
held by Vaclav Masek in the former Czechoslovakia's first-round
match against Mexico in 19-62. Korean midfielder Lee Eul-yong
leveled at one to one with a curling 25-meter free kick in the 9th
minute that shaved the inside of Rustu Recber's left post and sent
almost 65 thousand red-clad fans at Daegu's World Cup Stadium
wild. But Mansiz, recalled to replace injured Galatasary striker
Hasan Sas, scored his second and third goals of the tournament to
give Turkey a two-goal buffer after 32 minutes. South Korea
scored a late consolation goal when Song Chong-gug fired a
deflected shot past Recber to make it three to two in the final
seconds of the game.
