Justice Ministry to Introduce Plea Bargaining

A Justice Ministry committee has drafted revisions to criminal code that would allow plea bargaining for serious crimes including murder, burglary, bribery and terrorism.

The ministry made the announcement Monday, adding, however, that if a criminal suspect is found to have provided false testimony, prosecutors can call off the plea bargain.

The Justice Ministry will discuss the revised criminal code with the Supreme Public Prosecutors’ Office and will gather public opinions before finalizing it.

Plea bargaining is the process of negotiating a plea with the accused for a lesser charge or lighter sentence in return for cooperation in the investigation, such as giving up the names of accomplices.
