NK Leader Attends SPA Session, Conducts Reshuffle

North Korean leader Kim Jong-il reportedly attended a session of the North's parliament on Monday.

The North's official Korean Central Broadcasting Station reported that Kim attended the third session of the 12th Supreme People's Assembly.

According to the report, the rubber-stamp parliament promoted Jang Song-thaek, who is a member of the National Defense Commission and Kim's brother-in-law, to the post of vice head of the commission at the suggestion of the North Korean leader.

Meanwhile, the premier of the Cabinet, Kim Yong-il, was replaced by Choe Yong-rim, the chief secretary of the Pyongyang City Committee of the Workers' Party.

This is the first time the Supreme People’s Assembly has convened more than one session during a year's span since 1998 with the exception of 2003.

The SPA opened on April ninth and approved budgets and revisions to the North Korean constitution.
