Tomb from 1st Century BC Found in Gyeongju

A tomb that appears to have been created some two thousand years ago has been found in Gyeongju in North Gyeongsang Province.

The Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation says it discovered traces of a wooden coffin that had carbonized to resemble charcoal in an area where homes were to be built.

Inside the coffin, a large number of relics were found, including daggers, pommel fitting for a bronze dagger, bronze trinkets, and a lacquered fan believed to have covered the deceased’s face.

The tomb appears to have been constructed around the founding of the Silla Dynasty in the mid-to-second half of the first century, B.C. Judging by the ornate relics found inside the tomb, it appears to have been built for someone of considerable importance.
