BOK: N.Korean Economy Contracted 0.9pct in 2009

South Korea estimates that North Korea’s real gross domestic product (GDP) fell last year.

The Bank of Korea (BOK) announced that North Korea’s 2009 real GDP dipped 0-point-9-percent from 2008 in its estimate of 2009 economic growth in North Korea.

The North Korean economy contracted by one percent in 2006 and one-point-two percent in 2007. It achieved a three-point-one percent expansion in 2008.

Therefore, North Korea’s gross national income (GNI) is estimated to be 28-point-six trillion won, while its GNI per-capita is just one-point-two million won. Both figures are dwarfed by those posted by the South.

North Korea’s trade, excluding trade with South Korea, decreased by 410-million dollars in 2009 to three-point-four billion dollars. Inter-Korean trade fell by 140-million dollars to one-point-six billion dollars.
