Restored Gwanghwamun to be Unveiled Aug. 15

The Cultural Heritage Administration says the restored Gwanghwamun gate south of the Gyeongbok Palace will be made public on August 15th to mark the liberation of Korea from Japan’s colonial rule.

The administration said Thursday that 90 percent of the restoration project has been completed.

The administration will remove a temporary protective facility surrounding the cultural asset starting early this month.

A wooden board bearing the name of the gate produced during an 1865 reconstruction of Gwanghwamun will be added to the restored version of the gate.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Japan’s forcible annexation of Korea.
