The second round of colonel-level talks between the U.N. Command Military Armistice Commission and North Korea is expected to be delayed until after the foreign and defense ministers of South Korea and the U.S. meet in Seoul on Wednesday.
North Korea proposed during the first round of talks on Thursday that the second round be held Tuesday. But a senior Defense Ministry official in Seoul says the U.N. Command proposed the meeting be delayed until after the so-called “2+2" meeting takes place in Seoul on Wednesday.
In the second round of talks, the two sides are expected to discuss the timetable for general-level talks in which the sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” warship will be addressed.
During the Thursday meeting, the U.N. Command suggested the Cheonan incident be discussed under the framework of the armistice agreement signed after the Korean War. The North reiterated its stance that it is seeking to send a team to South Korea to probe the results of the Seoul-led investigation into the incident.
