NK Dam Presumably Discharged 100 Mln Tons of Water

The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs says that North Korea is presumed to have discharged 100 million tons of water southwards from its Hwanggang dam for two days starting Sunday.

The figure is a third of the total amount of water stored in the North Korean dam and double the amount of water the North discharged in September last year without prior notice, resulting in massive flooding in South Korea that killed six campers.

The ministry said that the amount of water presumed to have been released on Sunday and Monday far exceeds the storage capacity of the South’s Gunnam dam, which was built specifically to mitigate any potential flooding that could result from a discharge of the Hwanggang.

But no damage occurred in the South as a result of the North's release of water since the Gunnam dam opened its flood gates to control the water level.
