World Heritage Decision on 2 S.Korean Villages to Come on Sunday

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee will decide on whether to designate South Korea’s two traditional folk villages as world heritage sites on Sunday (KST.)

The committee is holding its 34th session in Brasilia. The meeting will end on August third.

The committee began Friday afternoon reviewing requests for designating 42 cultural assets worldwide as world heritage sites.

South Korea requested that UNESCO designate Hahoe Village in Andong, South Gyeongsang Province, and Yangju Village in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province as world heritage sites for their preservation of traditional culture and architecture styles.

But an advisory body to UNESCO suggested that the designation be delayed, since an integrated management system is necessary for the two villages.
