South Korea’s Unification Ministry is worried that North Korea’s move to use social networking services may be part of a propaganda scheme.
The North has reportedly opened an account on the social networking service “Twitter.”
The Unification Ministry has asked the Korea Communications Commission (KCC) to confirm whether North Korea has opened a Twitter account.
An official from the ministry said that if the North has indeed done so, the government will discuss with the KCC measures to block South Koreans from accessing the Web site links posted on North Korea’s Twitter page.
The Unification Ministry will also review the current inter-Korean exchange and cooperation law to see if any correspondence with North Korea through Twitter would violate local laws.
The ministry said that there is nothing wrong with South Koreans reading North Korean online postings, but that it is illegal for South Koreans to reply to North Korean postings or spread them online without government permission.
