'70 Have Died in Floods in N.Pyeongan Province'

A South Korean aid organization says that at least 70 people have died or gone missing in North Korea’s North Pyeongan Province due to recent heavy rains and the subsequent flooding of the Yalu River.

The humanitarian organization “Good Friends” said that 32 people died and 38 people went missing in the province amid seasonal torrential rains.

The organization said that most of the farming land in the province’s city of Sinuiju was inundated, much to the despair of people in the area who have already been suffering from food shortages.

The organization added that the North Korean government is coming up seriously short in its provision of rescue supplies.

However, the organization did say that the number of flood-related casualties is less this year than in years prior because the North Korean government gave a timely warning to residents to evacuate.
