Over 300 Accidents Reported at Gaeseong since 2004

More than 300 incidents, such as accidental injuries and crimes, have been reported at the Gaeseong Industrial Complex in North Korea since the inter-Korean joint venture went into operation in 2004.

According to the Unification Ministry in Seoul, a total of 316 accidents and incidents were reported at Gaeseong from 2004 to late July this year.

Industrial accidents accounted for 78 percent of the cases. The other incidents were comprised mostly of traffic accidents and crimes.

The most common industrial accidents were on-the-job injuries caused by falls and collapses of structures during the construction of new factories.

Major crimes include violence cases involving South Korean workers, smuggling of North Korean-made products into South Korea and intrusion into workers’ dormitories.
