The youngest son of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, Jong-un, has been named to top posts in the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea.

The North’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that Kim Jong-un was named to the newly created post of vice chairman of the ruling party’s Central Military Commission as well as a member of the party’s Central Committee during a convention of party delegates in Pyongyang on Tuesday.

The Central Military Commission controls the Korean People’s Army and is in charge of overseeing military policies. Observers say the move has made the younger Kim the number two man in the military.

Meanwhile, Kim Jong-il was renominated as general secretary of the Workers' Party as well as the chairman of the Central Military Commission.

Kim Jong-il along with four other top officials, including parliamentary leader Kim Yong-nam, were also chosen as members of the Political Bureau Presidium, which is considered the top decision-making body of the Workers’ Party.

KCNA said that the ruling party’s convention of top delegates was held on a grand scale and that Kim Yong-nam delivered the convention’s closing address on Tuesday.
