Unification Ministry to Provide W8.6 Bln for NK Flood Victims

The Unification Ministry has decided to support the South Korean Red Cross’s efforts to help flood victims in North Korea with eight-point-six billion won in inter-Korean economic cooperation funds.

Ministry spokeswoman Lee Jong-joo made the announcement Wednesday.

The eight-point-six billion won in assistance from the fund will be added by the Red Cross to the five-point-three billion won provided by the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries for North Korean flood assistance, bringing the total to around 14 billion won.

The assistance is comprised of five-thousand tons of rice, ten-thousand tons of cement and some three million cups of instant noodles for the city of Sinuiju, which recently fell prey to serious flood damage. The rice aid is expected to arrive in the North around the end of next month.
