President Lee Myung-bak says a sincere move by North Korea to abandon its nuclear ambitions is the only way the stalled six-way nuclear talks can be resumed.
Lee made the statement during the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Brussels on Tuesday, adding that the current scenario in which the number of nuclear weapons steadily grows while nuclear talks continue to be prolonged must stop.
Lee said that countries around the world must cooperate so that North Korea feels compelled to take part in the nuclear talks with a sincere goal of scrapping its nuclear program and becoming a member of the international community. He said that such a result will help the North’s economy recover and would create a better environment for the North Korean people.
Lee added that North Korea and Iran’s missile development efforts are a threat not only to neighboring countries but to faraway nations. He stressed the need for the world to cooperate to put a halt to such threats.
