Support Needed to Settle Hangeul in Cia-Cia Tribe

Written: 2010-10-11 08:50:56Updated: 2010-10-11 17:32:21

One year has passed since the Indonesian tribe of Cia-Cia adopted the Korean alphabet Hangeul as its writing system.

The Korean language is taking root as part of the tribe's daily life but more systematic support is called for.

In a local elementary school, only 80 students learn Hangeul among the school's 360 students. Those who learn have Hangeul class only once a week and there are no Korean classes at all at the tribe's other four elementary schools because there are only two Hangeul teachers.

The dire situation is similar at high schools where Korean is learned as a second language.

More support is necessary for the Korean language to swiftly settle in the Cia-Cia community.
