Seoul: NK Must Demonstrate Commitment to Denuclearization

South Korea says North Korea must demonstrate commitment to denuclearization if it wants to return to multilateral nuclear disarmament talks.

A senior South Korean Foreign Ministry official told reporters Wednesday that North Korea should pursue actions that match the international community’s move to provide the communist state with 750-thousand tons of heavy oil in energy aid if it hopes to restart the six-party talks.

The official added that if a new round of six-party talks does begin, agendas on enriched uranium and long-range missiles need to be addressed.

The official added that South Korea is willing to receive and coordinate opinions from the other nations, including the U.S. and China, to engage in negotiations for a sweeping denuclearization of the North in return for a comprehensive compensation package and a security guarantee.

The official also said that Seoul will make efforts to dramatically improve relations with China and that it is reviewing the organization of public and private cooperative groups, such as the Korea-China Friendship Association.
