Oct. 25 Designated as 'Dokdo Day'

The Korean Federation of Teachers’ Associations has designated October 25th as “Dokdo Day.”

As part of its celebrations to mark the day, the federation conducted a special class on Korea’s sovereignty over the nation’s easternmost islets at an elementary school in Seoul.

The federation will designate October 21st to the 27th of each year as the “Dokdo special class week,” during which a nationwide quiz contest on the islets will be held.

The chairman of the teachers’ organization hoped that the designation of “Dokdo Day” would help arouse public awareness about Korea’s ownership of the islets.

The federation chose the date as an homage to Korean Emperor Gojong, who proclaimed Dokdo part of Korea’s Ulleung Ilsand on October 25th of 1900.

Japanese broadcasters NHK and TBS covered the special Dokdo class and the designation ceremony on Monday.
