UNC, N.Korea to Hold Colonel-level Talks on Wednesday

The U.N. Command Military Armistice Commission and North Korea will open a seventh round of colonel-level talks at the truce village of Panmunjeom at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

The two sides failed to find common ground in the previous six rounds of colonel-level meetings, which dealt with the sinking of South Korea’s “Cheonan” naval vessel in March.

The Armistice Commission demanded that the two sides form a joint evaluation team tasked with uncovering the truth behind the naval disaster, saying that the North violated an armistice by sinking the naval vessel.

But North Korea is demanding that it be allowed to send its own inspection team to review the results of the international probe into the Cheonan incident that determined the vessel was brought down by a North Korean torpedo.

The two sides held the first colonel-level talks on July 15th.
