U.S. gives WFP first shipment of food aid to N. Korea

World Food Program ( or WFP ) spokesman Gerald Bourke told Radio Free Asia on Sunday that the US delivered the first shipment of its pledged 100,000 tons of food aid to North Korea. He said that the WFP received 45,000 tons of wheat from the US last weekend, and the remaining portions are expected in upcoming shipments between late September and early October, as well as in November. The US promised 76,000 tons of wheat, 15,000 tons of rice and 9,000 tons of canned milk to North Korea through the UN relief organization. Bourke said the food will be distributed to children and the elderly.
